Nature’s Sound System is a collaboration between Chanelle Brown and Nihal J. Singh, together they designed and constructed a bird house with a speaker attachment, for the Cannizaro Art in the Park, Sculpture Trail.
They learned that Cannizaro Park has a history of collecting ‘exotic’ plants and birds. The Aviary onsite was once a space for exhibiting a variety of birds. With this history in mind, the duo created a sculpture that is concerned about animal justice, ecology and wellbeing.
The design is inspired by the same analogue engineering as phonographs and seventeenth century ear trumpets. In this artwork, the sound of birdsong is amplified because of the shape of the ‘megaphone’ extension. There is no electricity involved! Chanelle and Nihal consider the sculpture to be an expression of nature’s very own sound system at work.
All the timber used for this project are offcuts kindly donated from local London-based Furniture Makers.
