A Message from the Sea: Rivah Mama, 2017

Rivah Mama, is the Jamaican water deity. Inspired by the Drexcyian mythos (first told by the Detroit electronic duo Drexciya), Chanelle remembers the mothers who birthed a renaissance generation of water species, after being violently thrown overboard a British Slave Ship during the Zong massacre (1783). The metaphysical and physical bodies of history and mythology are presented in real time during this live art demonstration.

This performance took place in sight of the River Clyde, Glasgow; once a dockyard for merchant ships carrying tobacco, sugar, cotton, rum and mahogany, resources imported from slave plantations in the Caribbean.
